Chlamydia: Transmission, Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention
Chlamydia Transmission
Chlamydia is highly infectious, easily transmitted and a very common STI. It is the most common bacterial STI in the world. It can be passed on by:
- Contact with an infected area: vagina, penis, throat, reproductive tracts, rectum, eye
- Unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex
- From Mother to Child during birth
Chlamydia Symptoms
A Chlamydia infection will frequently have no symptoms, with up to 90% of women and 70% of infected men having no symptoms of infection. This is a feature of this STI that contributes the most to its prevalence. The Chlamydia bacteria is easily spread through unprotected sexual contact and both the infected partner and the person being infected may not know they carry this STI. When symptoms are present they can take up to 1 to 3 weeks to appear and can include:
In Women:
- Lower abdominal pain
- Fever
- Pain or discomfort during sex
- Burning sensations or other pain when urinating
- Abnormal yellow or milky white vaginal discharge
- Unpleasant vaginal odour
- Bleeding inbetween your periods
- Burning and itching around the vagina or anus
In Men:
- Watery or milky white discharge from the penis
- Tender and/ or swollen testicles
- Sore throat
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Lower abdominal pain
Chlamydia Treatment
A Chlamydia infection will not go away by itself and needs to be treated with antibiotics. As most infected people do not know they carry the infection, testing is the only reliable way to know if you need treatment. If you are worried about a possible Chlamydia infection you should do the following:
- Book a Chlamydia test or an STI screen that includes a test for Chlamydia
- Do not engage in sexual activity until you know your results
- If positive, our doctor will prescribe the correct antibiotics
- Take the antibiotics and tell any recent sexual partners to also get tested
- Abstain from sex for a week while the antibiotic eliminates your infection
Chlamydia: Consequences of an Untreated Infection
Untreated Chlamydia infections can lead to further health problems. Even if you do not have any symptoms, the Chlamydia infection will do harm to your internal organs which can seriously damage your health and affect your ability to have children. The health consequences of an untreated Chlamydia infection can include:
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID
- Blocked fallopian tubes
- Increased risk of ectopic pregnancy
- Premature birth
- Mother to child infection during birth
- Inflamed testicles
- Reduced sperm quality
- Urethritis or an infection of the urethra
- Epididymitis, an infection of the tubes that carry sperm out of the body
- Proctitis, or inflammation of the rectum
Chlamydia Prevention
Chlamydia infections can be prevented if you take a few sensible precautions.
- Always use a condom when you have sex
- Get tested for Chlamydia regularly
- Encourage your partners to get tested too
- Limit the number of partners you have sex with
- If you are concerned about a possible current Chlamydia infection, get tested.
- Even if you have been cured of Chlamydia in the past, you are not immune and can be re-infected.
